Robert Oliver Place Enhancement Project (ROPE)
The ROPE project is a community based enhancement project that began in September, 2007 and is now in the final design phase. Robert Oliver Place is the road/sidewalk that runs from The Other Barn courtyard to the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center. Funding for project is through a $100,000 Howard County Community Enhancement Grant awarded to OMCA. The goal of the project was to create a design for enhancing Robert Oliver Place as a central public space of the Oakland Mills village center with new pedestrian and street amenities. Community collaboration was a key component of the project.
The final design plan is multi-functional. ROPE will provide a special gathering space that works for both daily use and community events. The new design will create a strong visual connection between the roadway and existing courtyard to create a sense of a front door welcome mate. Colorful sidewalks will incorporate the Oakland Mills logo into the concrete and give the new sidewalk a pop! The roadway will be easy to close off to vehicular traffic to accommodate the farmers market, festivals and special events. New lighting and trees and vertical elements will be incorporated into the project. ROPE construction should begin later this summer/early fall and we anticipate completion in the early 2010.
